Benjamin Netanyahu’s government pushes forward with new bill

Benjamin Netanyahu and his government have finally pushed forward with a new bill that is set to limit the powers of the Supreme Court.

Roads have been blocked and protestors are still not ready to agree on a bill that will limit the powers of the supreme court.

In terms of Democracy, Benjamin Netanyahu’s government had undermined it a lot and most of the protestors are still adamant and had not given up, they aim to still appeal to the high court.

In remarks to the Knesset (parliament), opposition leader Yair Lapid called the step “a takeover by an extreme minority over the Israeli majority”.

Israel’s Justice Minister Yariv Levin however congratulated MPs, telling them: “We have taken the first step in a historic process to correct the judicial system.”

But the government is playing deaf ears to all this and is hopeful these reforms will lay down a better future for Israel.

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets weekly since the start of the year in protest at what they say is an attack on democracy. The government says the reforms serve to strengthen democracy, arguing the Supreme Court has accrued too much power over politics in recent decades.

The government argues that the measures are necessary to correct an imbalance in power which has seen the courts increasingly intervene in political decisions in recent decades.
