Spain beats Sweden 2-1 to qualify for their first ever Women’s World Cup Finals.
Spain reach their first ever Women’s World Cup finals after a late winner left Sweden in tears.
Exactly 15 days ago today, Japan humiliated Spain 4-0 in a Group C encounter on 31st July at the Wellington Regional Stadium.
It was an intense game which brought out the best in the two teams. With just 10 minutes to play to the end of regulation time, it was the brilliance of Salma Paralluelo who gave her side the lead. Sweden who have displayed their resilience throughout the tournament didn’t allow the lead close to the end of the match to distract them; they equalized through a stunning finish from Rebecka Blomqvist. But when everyone thought the drama was enough and with extra time approaching, from nowhere came the game winner which shocked not only Sweden but everyone who thought he or she had seen enough drama. It was a shot from Spain’s captain Olga Carmon which crashed the underside of the cross bar and made it way into the net. A beautiful goal which booked Spain ticket to their first ever Women’s World Cup final.
It was an atmosphere of joy and despair at the sound of the last whistle of the game. Spain couldn’t hide their excitement and Sweden fell to their knees in total disappointment and despair.
Vilda who is the manager of the Spanish team was proud of her team. “I’m proud of my team and of what we’ve achieved. We’re extremely happy. If you go into the dressing room now it’s incredible how they’re celebrating. We’re going into Sydney tomorrow and we want to win” She stated.
Spain is comfortably waiting for either co-host Australia or England for the final match on Sunday in Sydney.
