The dream of every up and coming musician is to blow up on the internet and receive worldwide attention and recognition and that is exactly what has happened to Virginia native Oliver Anthony.

From nowhere, the world woke up to his song “Rich Men North of Richmond” going viral on the internet after some famous influencers started sharing the song. This feat propelled the singer who was unknown a week ago to take the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 eliminating big names like Taylor Swift, Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Olivia Rodrigo et cetera. The achievement also earns Anthony the distinction of being the only artist to ever make their first entry in the Hot 100 at number one.

From nowhere to somewhere, the fairytale story continues for Anthony whose song has garnered 147,000 units sold through digital distribution topping the iTunes Charts.

“I wrote the music I wrote because I was suffering with mental health and depression,” Anthony wrote. “These songs have connected with millions of people on such a deep level because they’re being sung by someone feeling the words in the very moment they were being sung. No editing, no agent, no bullshit. Just some idiot and his guitar. The style of music that we should have never gotten away from in the first place.”

The song which saw the song saw 17.4 million streams last week and took the top spots on both Apple Music US chart and Spotify US charts as well, has not changed the life of Anthony who said in a Facebook post that he has turned down $8million offers on his music, lives out of a $750 camper he bought on Craigslist, somewhere on a plot of land he bought in 2019 for which he still owes $60,000.

It’s yet another great feat for country music this year.
