Budapest 2023 : World Athletics Championships comes to an end with USA topping the medal table.

It was nothing short of spectacular skill, determination and pride at the just ended 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary where 46 countries came together to battle it out, over a nine day period of competition.

Team USA bagged home 29 medals which included 12 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 9 bronze medals. This was an impressive performance considering the fact that, no other country was able to clinch 5 gold medals; Canada who took the second place on the medal count won 4 gold medals and 2 silver making it 6 medals. Spain came third with 4 gold and one silver. Jamaica and Kenya took home the same number of gold medals 3 and same number of bronze medals 4 but with the silver medals, Jamaica surpassed that of Kenya, winning 5 silver medals beating Kenya’s 3 to clinch the fourth position on the table.

Team USA have proven that they are one of the big names in athletics and they always prove that they are worth their salt.

They won both men’s and women’s 4x100m relay gold medals. Noah Lyles had an impressive performance at the championship winning hat-trick becoming six-time world champion, which made him the fifth man in the 40-year history of the championships to win both 100 and 200m at the same event joining great names like Maurice Greene, Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay and Usain Bolt.

Europe’s big names like Great Britain, Netherland, Sweden and Norway did their best but had to walk home with two gold medals each akin to that of Ethiopia who came sixth on the medal table ahead of the aforementioned four European countries.

China won two medals at the championships which came in the form of bronze from women’s discus throw and women’s shot put.

South Africa and Nigeria went home without a medal. The climax of the night was the scintillating performance by Kenya’s Mary Moraa who clinched the gold medal in women’s 800m. It was a spectacular performance which saw the Kenyan becoming everyone’s favorite.

The next World Athletics Championships will take place in Tokyo 2025.
