In a 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Ecuador, Messi equaled a record previously held by Luiz Suarez with an impressive performance for Argentina. Argentina had to face Ecuador in a thrilling World Cup qualifier with both teams doing their best.

Messi kept his stunning performance and his trademark touch of making a mark anytime he steps on the field of play. The Inter Miami signee has equaled Luis Suarez’s record as the player with the most goals in South America’s World Cup qualifiers, as captured by data from Transfermarkt.

It was his 78th minute electrifying free kick which broke the deadlock when he stepped once again when Argentina needed him. The game saw Ecuador not leaving anything to chance and gave the World Cup champions a difficult time which allowed them a few chances in the first half. Newly signed Moises Caicedo delivered in the defensive midfield role  restricting Argentina from a chance at goal.

Talking of chances, Inter Milan skipper, Lautaro Martinez had the best opportunity of the game at the stroke of half-time but saw his effort hit the post. Messi stepped in as usual and delivered a stunning free kick. The Inter Miami star couldn’t hide his joy when his effort went into the net in an electrifying fashion. Argentina is looking to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and defend the title they won in Qatar which can happen due to the depth in their squad and the performance of the team. Even though Ecuador proved to be a tough opponent, players like Messi with their individual talent can carry their team through at the end of the day regardless of your hard work.

Lionel Messi now stands at par with Luiz Suarez on the most goals in South America’s World Cup qualifiers record.
