Just one day after his bombshell interview about his marriage with Spelling, McDermott celebrated his birthday and shared the “sage wisdom” he received from his sister about getting older

Dean McDermott is feeling grateful as he turns another year older.

On Thursday, McDermott celebrated his 57th birthday and revealed how the day had caused him to reflect on his sobriety.

He marked the occasion and his new year of life with a video on Instagram, sharing, “I am posting to let everybody know that it is my birthday today I turned 57. And yes, I’m fishing for birthday wishes.”

He continued, “I’m having an amazing day. I’m sober. I’m healthy. I feel fantastic.”

The TV personality went on to reveal some “very sage wisdom” from his sister, Dale. “She said, ‘Deano, it’s just a number. Everybody gets to be young, but not everybody gets to be old.'”

“So wear your experience like a badge of honor, happy birthday to all those fellow Scorpios out there — and especially on November 16,” McDermott concluded, “Bless you all. I’m having an amazing day. And I love life.”

McDermott’s birthday comes as he navigates his ongoing divorce from estranged wife Tori Spelling. He first revealed they were splitting in June in a since-deleted Instagram post. On Wednesday, he opened up for the first time to The Daily Mail about their relationship and the role he played in their downfall.

“I posted that because I was at the end of my rope,” he told the Daily Mail of their split announcement, explaining that his issues with substance abuse and their financial insecurity had left him feeling helpless. “I didn’t know what to do. I had burned everything down yet again.”

He explained how he was feeling “drunk and angry” after a particularly nasty fight with his estranged wife, and owned up to causing a lot of “pain” for Spelling.

“All Tori’s ever done to this day is want me to be happy and healthy and I inflicted a lot of damage and pain on that woman,” he told the outlet.

Since McDermott announced the couple’s separation, he entered a sober living home, Harmony Place, but said his financial insecurities still persist.

In September, McDermott was photographed signing up for food stamps. He addressed those photos during his interview with Daily Mail, saying: “Today I’m broke – you’ve all seen the food stamp pictures and I’m so grateful that that exists, that people can go in their time of need and get assistance with food.”

He noted how these changes and Harmony Place have “showed [him] how to live,” and added, “[It] right-sized my life and it showed me what’s important.”

“It was great going from all the glitz and glamour of a 6,500-square-foot house into treatment into a 3,000-square-foot house with nine guys and having a roommate,” said McDermott. “I’m so grateful, and I’ve never been happier in my life. I’m in sober living and going to be 57 this month while on food stamps. But I’ve never been happier.”

McDermott also said he has not seen the couple’s five children since June and hopes to reunite with them — and Spelling — soon.

Throughout the interview, he only had gushing words for Spelling and expressed his support as she moves on. In early November, the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum was seen kissing Ryan Cramer. McDermott has also moved on and is now dating Lily Calo.

The former couple share five children — daughters Stella Doreen, 15, Hattie Margaret, 12, and sons Liam Aaron, 16, Finn Davey, 11, and Beau Dean, 6. The two married on May 7, 2006, and renewed their vows on May 8, 2010.
