Dana Carvey Honored on Saturday Night Live by Colin Jost After Death of Son Dex Carvey: ‘We Love You’
Colin Jost is honoring Dana Carvey following the tragic death of his son Dex Carvey.
The Saturday Night Live star, 41, paid tribute to SNL family member Carvey, 68, and his wife Paula after the passing of their son Dex during the show’s broadcast on Saturday.
As host Jason Momoa closed out the show, Jost stood to the side and held up a huge sign to the camera that read, “WE LOVE YOU DANA AND PAULA,” in a touching gesture to the SNL alum and his wife of 40 years.
Carvey and Paula announced their son Dex had died from “an accidental drug overdose” on Wednesday, Nov. 15 in a joint statement on Friday. He was 32.
“Last night we suffered a terrible tragedy,” the grieving parents wrote on Instagram. “Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things–music, art, film making, comedy — and pursued all of them passionately. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Dex loved life.”
“And when you were with him, you loved life too. He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend, Kaylee,” their statement continued. “Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever.”
The pair finished by acknowledging those suffering from addiction. “To anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers. Dana & Paula,” they concluded.
Dex died at his home, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
Dex followed in the footsteps of his father as he pursued a career in comedy. In 2016, he opened for Carvey’s Netflix special Straight White Male, 60 and he appeared with his father in The Funster mini series (2013). He also featured in Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser (2010) and the short film Carpool Pandering (2016).
Following his announcement of his son’s death, Carvey posted a photo of Dex smiling on Instagram with the caption. “F— the tabloids. This is my boy,” in memory of his late son.
“Our beautiful boy,” Paula added in the comment section.
Carvey — who also shares son Thomas, 30, with Paula — posted an additional photo, of him and Dex working together, captioning it, “What a joy.”

On Saturday, Carvey thanked fans for their support as he also shared that he is stepping away from work following his son’s death. “This is just to say thank you,” he wrote on Instagram and X (formerly known as Twitter).
“We received so many beautiful messages from people who knew Dex. These touched us more than we could ever express in words,” the Wayne’s World star wrote. “I will be taking a break from work and social media — trying to figure out what life looks like now that we are a family of 3.”
“We will heal the best we can and carry on. Our darling Dex would have wanted it that way,” Carvey concluded.
