Bad blood or wildest dreams: What’s going to be the fate of Taylor Swift’s Asian fans.
The name behind the 2012 masterpiece Red album Taylor Swift has cemented her name in the fabric of music’s history books with every tour she embarks on since releasing her first project.
Between May 8 and October 6 in 2018 Swift performed 38 dates. Those shows were enough to gross $266.1 million on ticket sales of over 2 million. The aforementioned figures show the caliber of musician she is and the attention she commands when it comes to touring and the story isn’t different with her 2023 ongoing Eras tour which keeps pulling in huge numbers filling huge arenas.
Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour scheduled to end in August 2024 has seen a massive reception in South East Asia.
According to the statistics from Spotify, the cities among the world’s top locations for streaming her music are the capital of Indonesia Jakarta, Singapore and Quezon in the Philippines hence her team wouldn’t hesitate putting up a show over there knowing they are bound to pull in the numbers.
That’s what happened when tickets for her Asia tour were released and to the surprise of many, the number was 330,000 seats that went on sale on Friday for her only stop in the region for millions of her fans to compete for a one or two and it came with ordeals.
Many of her Asian fans couldn’t help it but queued for an opportunity to get to see her perform due to the fact that only 330,000 tickets went on sale.
Many have asked what could be the reason for such a number of ticket for a superstar of her caliber?
To some people, Taylor swift’s wardrobe and stage appearance could be a factor coming to a Muslim and conservative dominated part of the world. She’s known for wearing raunchy clothes and such costumes are akin to taboo in that part of the world and that might’ve discouraged promoters to work with her on her Eras Tour.
The aforementioned assumption about wardrobe which stems from values which could be a reason why the tour isn’t going to happen in many places in Asia regardless of her millions of fans there; to some is due to the fact that some of her colleague musicians experience extreme scrutiny from some part of the Asian community when they had to go and tour there. From singer Lady Gaga to British band ; two of the brands who have came under extreme criticism from Islamic groups in Malaysia and Indonesia for their beliefs and values.
Gaga called off a sold out show in Jakarta, meant to be her biggest stop in Asia, after religious protesters threatened violence. The protest by the public also resulted in Indonesian police refusing to issue permits for the star to perform.
Coldplay came under criticism in Malaysia from a Malaysian party to call off their show in the country’s capital Kuala Lumpur due to their acceptance of gay rights.
The truth is, 330,000 seats for millions to compete for is not a small hurdle to overcome so my question is which her of her swifties in Asia are going to see their wildest dreams see the light of day or are going to have bad blood with Taylor Swift and her team for such meager number of seats.
