Manchester City have claimed the Uefa Super Cup trophy after beating Spanish side Sevilla 5-4 on penalties after it ended 1-1 in regulation  time.

The Champions of Uefa Champions League and the team which won the treble last season in England ; English Premier League, The FA Cup and the Uefa Champions League, have added another trophy to their list, the Uefa Super Cup which is their first ever Uefa Super Cup in the history of the club.

The game which many can attest to the fact that it was nerve wracking and enthralling, brought out the best in both teams and the winner had to be decided on penalty shootout.

The penalty takers used their individual brilliance and expertise which made sure all the  first nine-spot kicks were converted but the Karaiskakis Stadium in Greece experienced a mixture of excitement and despair when the tenth kick by Sevilla defender Nemanja Gudelj struck his kick against the crossbar to hand victory to Man City. This win came 15 days after Man City lost the community shield on penalties to Arsenal.

The Super Cup didn’t ably made up for the community shield loss but it also added to the statistics of Pep Guardiola. The Super Cup was the 15th trophy won by the club under Guardiola’s reign since taking over in 2016.

It was the Europa League winners who took the lead in the 25th minute through Youssef En-Nesyri but didn’t see them to the prize because in the 63rd minute, the young champ Cole Palmer equalized through a header. Cole Palmer had a great game. He changed the complexion of the game when he scored the equalizer and it was all to play for after that.

Both teams tried their hardest to score but none saw the light of day in regulation time.

The Uefa Super Cup is played between the winners of the Uefa Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
