Kaia Gerber Says Cindy Crawford Is a ‘Cool Mom,’ but Admits She ‘Embarrasses Me Constantly’ (Exclusive)
Cindy Crawford may be a world-famous supermodel, but to Kaia Gerber she’ll always be “mom.”
When chatting at the Planet Omega exhibition in New York City, the mother-daughter duo opened up to PEOPLE about what bonding looks like for them these days amid their respectively busy schedules as fashion industry mainstays.
While Crawford and Gerber have worked alongside each other on several campaigns — with one of the many being OMEGA, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer for which the models are both global ambassadors — the pair makes time for each other when they’re not on set, too.
“I do feel like we’ve established a really strong bond and friendship outside of just a mother-daughter dynamic, which has been so fun for me over the last few years,” Gerber tells PEOPLE from the exhibition on Nov. 14.
“We went to Burning Man together,” Crawford jumps in, before the two start rattling off a number of activities they enjoy doing when they’re not working.
“We just did a retreat together… We both love reading,” The Super Models star lists, to which her daughter chimes in: “Yeah, it’s a lot of like talking about what books we’re reading, sharing podcasts—”
“Theater,” adds Crawford. Gerber agrees, “Yeah, we go see a lot of theater together.”
And while they love bonding over similar interests, Gerber says that her mom still knows how to embarrass her, just like any other mom might do to her daughter.
“She is a cool mom and she still embarrasses me constantly,” admits Gerber. “But it’s good! It brings me back down to earth… I probably embarrass her constantly as well.”
While the fashion-forward power duo know how to have a good time off set, they’re sure to bring the fun (and the laughs!) when they’re on the job too.
“We got the giggles so bad on the red carpet just now,” Gerber reveals after posing alongside her mom for photos moments before chatting with PEOPLE at the exhibition. “So it feels more like I get to work with just a really good friend.”
Though speaking to her mom, Gerber admits with a laugh, “But, maybe I would complain a little bit more to you than I would to another person, but I wouldn’t say anything different than that.”
Crawford makes clear, “But I think when we work together, it’s really no different than if I was working with another professional. I feel like when I’m at work with you, it’s not like, ‘Oh, I am with my daughter. She’s also Kaia and she has her own place in the world.'”
Elsewhere in PEOPLE’s conversation with the mother-daughter duo, Gerber was asked which of Crawford’s iconic looks she’d like to recreate one day that she hasn’t already — to which she replied, “There’s so many that I love and that I think are so iconic.”
While she began to name several of her mom’s most memorable looks — like the red Versace gown she wore to the Oscars in 1991, as well as her iconic 1992 Pepsi commercial ‘fit — she came to a conclusion.
“It’s like some things are just so good you don’t even want to touch them,” Gerber continued. “And I think some of those moments I’m just like, ‘Leave them there,’ you know?”
