Monty Don breaks tradition: A garden revolution at Chelsea Flower show

Queen Camilla has reportedly held a private meeting with Monty Don, the beloved BBC Gardeners’ World star, to allow him the opportunity to pay a heartfelt tribute.

The meeting comes as Monty is designing his first-ever garden for the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show—a project that’s already stirring excitement for its unique, dog-friendly twist.

In a bold departure from tradition, Monty is making his garden accessible to four-legged friends, despite the Royal Horticultural Society’s usual ban on animals at the event (with the exception of guide dogs).

His design will feature a lush lawn, a serene meadow, a charming summerhouse, and inscribed brick paths honoring the beloved pets of radio personalities and RHS ambassadors.

Among the special tributes, Queen Camilla’s Jack Russell Terriers, Bluebell and Beth, will have their names added to the path, making the tribute even more personal.

Don’s heartfelt tribute at the Chelsea Flower Show garden will include the names of his own dog, Ned, as well as those of Camilla’s beloved Jack Russells, Bluebell and the late Beth.

The 13-year-old Beth, who tragically passed away after being diagnosed with an inoperable tumour, had been a constant companion to the Queen since her adoption from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in 2011, when she was just 12 weeks old. Bluebell joined the family the following year.

Beth’s passing was met with sorrow, and Buckingham Palace shared a moving tribute on its social media, saying: “A sad farewell to Beth, the Queen’s much-loved companion from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home who brought such joy, whether on walkies, helping on official duties or curled up by the fire.”

As a patron of Battersea, Queen Camilla had visited the centre with Beth in 2020, where the pair unveiled a plaque in a heartwarming moment.

In a touching video, she was seen tugging at the covering with her teeth, capturing the affection the Queen had for her cherished companion.

Monty’s garden will now serve as a loving tribute to these much-loved pets, with their names inscribed alongside those of other beloved dogs, making it a deeply personal and poignant design.
