Africa has not recorded a win at this year’s Women’s World Cup yet. Nigeria’s dramatic game against Canada ended in a goalless draw with Abiodun receiving a red card in the dying minutes of added time.

Zambia had the opportunity to be the first African side to record a win at the ongoing World Cup but it was a herculean task to overcome being a debutant tasting their first Women’s World Cup against 2011 champions and runners up in 2015 Japan. They couldn’t contain the pressure from the Japanese team and succumbed to a thrilling display of strength and determination which ended a 5-0 score line.

Zambia definitely saw that coming considering the experience and the caliber of talents their opponent possesses.

Africa once again has the opportunity at redemption to record a win and the entire continent is counting on South Africa to do today against Sweden.

Sweden had a thrilling game against Nigeria in 2015 when they opened their Women’s World Cup campaign against Nigeria drawing 3-3.

Today they face reigning African champions, South Africa. Will we see another high scoring encounter?

At the Wellington Regional Stadium today, can Africa make a bold statement to the rest of the world or they are going to be romped by Sweden ? Time will when the referee blows the whistle at the end of the game.
