Rishi Sunak takes hard steps against migrant students
UK downs student visas by 80%
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said that his government reduced migration and that student visas are now down by 80% in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The government of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been planning to reduce the number of students coming to Britain along with care staff and workers, who are low salaried. This also includes prevention of some post-graduate students from bringing family members.
The number of international postgraduate students paying deposits to study at British universities this September had dropped by 63% as compared to the previous year, following the government’s restrictions on education visas, said the Migration Advisory Committee, an independent body which gives the government advice.
Further restrictions on the so-called graduate route, which allows foreign students to work in Britain for up to two years after graduation, would lead to job losses, course closures and a risk “that some institutions would fail”, warned the report.
From Oxford and Cambridge to Imperial College London, Britain boasts some of the most famous and sought after universities in the world. As many world leaders have studied at British colleges, business leaders argue that they boost innovation, increase creativity and provide a form of soft power.
