The head coach of England’s women’s national team, Sarina Wiegman was very optimistic that her team would win the World Cup.

After leading the English team to winning the European championship, she had high hopes that they would win the World Cup. Prior to the game she shared her thoughts on her expectations:

“We’re excited, we actually feel ready.

The team is excited, we are excited. We’ve analysed Spain, of course, everyone is fit, we have one more training session, we can’t wait.”

She made it clear that there were no tension in the camp, their focus is on the game ahead.

“No. After the Australia game we were really excited, we enjoyed that moment, but since yesterday we have been getting ready for Spain” She clarified.

“The good thing is we have the experience from [the Euros] last year. The further you go in a tournament the more exciting it becomes, we know that, but when you bring it back, in the end it is just a game so we have to focus on what our plan is, execute our tasks, stick together and find a way to win.”

Regardless of her thoughts, it was the minutes of the field that had the final say and when it was time to do the work, it was Spain who won the game after their captain Olga Carmona scared the all-important goal of the game to see Spain win the World Cup.

Even though she couldn’t lead them to victory at this World Cup, nonetheless she leaves the World Cup with new records to her name which includes reaching four major world finals  , having also guided the English team to European Championship glory in 2022. She also took the Dutch women’s team to the finals of the Women’s World Cup in 2019 where they lost 2-0 to USWNT. She won the Euro 2017 with the Dutch Women’s National Team. Due to her impeccable record, there are speculations of moves to the Dutch men’s team and the England men’s team job respectively.
