‘Seriously’: Ex-GOP Lawmaker Sounds Alarm On Trump’s 2028 Plans

David Jolly warned that Trump could try to stay in office, even though the Constitution forbids being elected to a third term.

A former Republican member of Congress is warning Americans to take President Donald Trump’s talk of a potential third term “seriously.”

“I think we have to believe them when they say it,” former Rep. David Jolly (R-Fla.) said on MSNBC on Sunday. “We have to believe that this is something they have the designs on.”

While the Constitution forbids being elected president more than twice, Trump’s allies have floated a third term anyway. Trump didn’t rule it out and insisted he was “not joking.” On Friday, close Trump ally Steve Bannon predicted Trump would run again in 2028 and win.

Jolly pointed out that elections are run at the state level, where officials could disqualify Trump in at least some cases.

He said:

“So the question becomes: Well, what is Steve Bannon referring to? How would they do this? Would it be a declaration of emergency from Donald Trump? Would it be martial law? Or would it be the one theory that apparently could work, which would be you flip the ticket, JD Vance runs at the top, he gets elected, resigns, Donald Trump moves back to the presidency.”

Jolly said while it sounds “crazy,” it also has to be taken seriously.

“Recognize there’s a constitutional threat in the White House in Donald Trump, and recognize that they may indeed try to do this,” he warned. “We should prepare for that now.”
