It was an opportunity for either side to make history as the its first Women’s World Cup trophy and Spain stepped forward to do it.

Spain defeated England 1-0 to clinch the Women’s World Cup on Sunday in Sydney.

The tournament which was previously won by the USWNT is currently in the hands of Spain’s women’s team after an impressive performance. England played some splendid football throughout the tournament, but in the end, they had no answers for Spain’s high-intensity press and ability to manoeuvre the ball efficiently in England’s half.

Spain are the first team in Women’s football history to be reigning World Cup champions at Under-17, Under-20 and Senior level.

It was the skipper of the team Carmona who once again had the only goal of the finals which helped her team and country in making history as the second European team to win the trophy since Germany in 2003.

Her goal which came 29 minutes in the first half was enough to help them lift the trophy.

Spain picked up the ball at the halfway line, with Caldentey finding Carmona on her left side inside the box.

She placed a beautiful shot to the far post bottom corner to send Spanish fans into a moment of celebration.

England did all they could but it turned out to be a day for the Spanish team.

It was an atmosphere of excitement for Spain and despair for England. England’s captain Millie Bright shared her thoughts after the game and stated that though they are disappointed, when it settles in a week or two, they will be really proud of themselves.

After the game Spain’s Aitana Bonmati was awarded the FIFA Golden Ball

England’s Mary Earps received the Golden Glove Award

Salma Paralluelo of Spain was awarded the FIFA Best Young Player Award at the award.
