Travis Kelce Had a Bit of a ‘Clue’ Taylor Swift Would Change ‘Karma’ Lyrics but Was ‘Still Shocked’
It was the lyric change heard around the world — but it wasn’t as much of a surprise to the man on the Chiefs himself.
On Wednesday’s episode of his New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce (Presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment) podcast, Travis Kelce revealed his thoughts on Taylor Swift’s sweet shoutout to him during her Buenos Aires show on Saturday night.
During her last song of the Eras Tour stop, she changed the lyrics of “Karma” to reflect her budding romance with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end as she sang, “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs, coming straight home to me,” causing raucous applause from the crowd and an adorable reaction from Kelce, 34, himself.
Jason Kelce asked his brother on the podcast, “How does it feel to officially be ‘the guy on the Chiefs?’ ” which prompted a laugh from Travis, who said, “You mean ‘Karma?’ ”
The Chiefs tight end then revealed that he had prior warning that Swift, 33, might do something special to recognize his presence in the audience, after he flew to Argentina for the weekend on his bye week.
“Yeah no I had no clue that…” he began, before shifting gears and admitting, “Well, I might have had a little bit of a clue, but definitely when I heard it come out of her mouth, [it] still shocked me.”
Jason, 35, said “you could tell in the video” that Travis was shocked, referring to the widely circulated fan footage that captured the NFL player’s reaction to Swift’s shoutout.
“I was like, ‘Oh, she really just said that,’ ” Travis said.
He then apologized for leaving Swift’s dad, Scott Swift, “hanging,” as Jason said, in the moment as he was “looking for a high-five.”
“Yeah, Mr. Swift, I apologize big guy,” Travis said. “Aw, man. I missed that. I never miss a high-five, too. Big high-five guy. It’s the most electric thing you can do at an event and so — sorry Mr. Swift.”
The missed moment was also captured in fan footage, which showed Travis beaming and holding his head in disbelief as Swift called him out and her dad similarly excited as he clapped along.
After the show ended, the two were seen greeting each other excitedly as Swift ran into her beau’s arms and they shared a sweet kiss.
Reflecting on Swift’s show generally, Travis, who has been romantically linked to the singer since September, said he was “blown away” by the three-hour long set, which features a collection of her hits from throughout her career.
“It’s an electric crowd too,” he added of the crowd that he described as between 65,000 and 70,000 people. “It was fun, man.”
He concluded the podcast’s segment about his visit to Argentina by sharing, “I was enjoying myself down there in Buenos Aires. The show was even more electric knowing that I had a little bit more to enjoy it for and yeah. Taylor absolutely ripped it. She killed it. And it looked like she was having some fun up there.”
As for their date night on Friday, which took place as a result of her show being postponed due to bad weather, Travis said that was “the only night we had the chance to go to dinner” and he shared that that’s when he met Swift’s dad.
A source told PEOPLE that the couple “looked so cute on their low-key date night” and that “they also left holding hands.”
The source added that “the crowd in the restaurant briefly cheered as they walked out” and that “Travis was beaming.”
